After weeks of speculation, Matchroom USA have finally made the official announcement that Andy Ruiz Jr will be coming out of the opposite corner to face heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua on June 1st.
The Californian challenger scored a 5th round retirement win over Alexander Dimitrenko on the Danny Garcia vs Adrian Granados card in Carson, California on April 20th.
Ruiz Jr might be seen by many as the lucky recipient of a golden ticket to instant fame and fortune, but the by lingual Mexican/American has already challenged for a world title against New Zealander Joseph Parker in 2016, and was on the wrong side of a tight decision in Parkers homeland.
Ruiz should still be in good shape having fought only 10 days ago and his team will have been preparing him since talks began with Eddie Hearn over the possibility of Ruiz Jr being selected.
While boxing fans have struggled to understand why Adam Kownacki and Luis Ortiz turned down the opportunity, Ruiz Jr jumped at the chance which will make him a popular choice.
